DUBLIN, Ireland: The significant government investment to support hosting the Ryder Cup golf tournament at Adare, Co Limerick, in 2027 will create 1,450 jobs.
Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, announced the jobs for the Limerick region in Adare this week.
The 1,450 jobs will be created between the provision of infrastructure for the event, during the event, and beyond the event, it is understood.
The cream of golf talent from Europe and America will be seen battling for honors at the Ryder Cup at the luxurious five-star Adare Manor golf resort between September 13 and 19.
Limerick billionaire and philanthropist JP McManus owns the Manor. He has employed an army of personnel to upgrade the 18-hole golf course to world-class standards.
O'Donovan said the Ryder Cup golf tournament is expected to bring a huge financial benefit to Ireland's government. He said his goal is for the money spent in Ireland by both foreign and local visitors coming to Adare for the event to exceed the 262 million euros earned by Italy when the Ryder Cup was held in Rome, and to exceed the 235 million euros earned by France when Paris hosted it in 2018. He added, "We want this to have the biggest impact ever."
He said the mid-west region, especially Limerick, will gain major worldwide attention because the Ryder Cup will be broadcast in 185 countries and reach about 375 million households. The minister noted that Ireland already attracts nearly 250,000 golf tourists each year and believes the 2027 event will further increase those numbers.
O'Donovan also announced 5.7 million euros in government funding to make sure the tournament leaves long-term benefits for Adare, the wider Limerick area, and Ireland overall. Several "legacy projects" have been planned to turn Adare into an important cultural and tourism centre in the region.
These projects include large investments in local infrastructure. About 2.8 million euros will be spent renovating the historic 1911 village hall, with 80 percent of the cost covered by the government. Another 1.9 million euros will go toward upgrading the Adare Heritage Centre, with 1.2 million euros coming from the department. In addition, one million euros will be used to improve 1.5 kilometres of streets, footpaths, and public lighting in the village.
The minister also set aside 500,000 euros for environmental efforts, including planting more than 100 native trees. He said that even though the Ryder Cup is still 19 months away, its impact is already evident, with youth participation in golf rising by 25 percent over the past year.
O'Donovan said he was pleased to fund these projects and wants Adare to look its best for both residents and visitors, not only during the tournament but for many years after. He also acknowledged that large events can cause short-term inconvenience for locals, which is why the government focuses on long-lasting improvements when hosting major international sports events.
