NEW DELHI, India: U.S. President Donald Trump called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the week and discussed the situation in the Middle East, including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open.
This was stated by U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, and Modi said in separate posts on X.
It was also the first call between the two leaders since the U.S. and Israel carried out joint attacks on Iran on February 28.
Modi said that India supports efforts to reduce tensions and restore peace as soon as possible. He added that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, safe, and accessible is very important for the whole world.
The conflict has affected many sectors, including air travel, shipping, and gas supplies. It has also nearly closed the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key route for about 40 percent of India's crude oil imports.
Modi told Parliament on March 23 that the crisis has created serious challenges for India. However, he said the Indian economy remains strong and that the country has sufficient petroleum, fertilisers, and coal to handle disruptions in trade and energy.
A White House official confirmed that Trump and Modi spoke, but did not share details of their discussion.
